Denmark's history spans 1200 years — from the Viking Age, the medieval kingdom, through the Reformation, Napoleonic times, to modern Denmark.

Viking Age (793–1066)

Vikings from Denmark raided England, France, Spain. Danelaw in England (878–954). Cnut the Great ruled a North Sea empire: Denmark, England, Norway (1016–1035). Harald Bluetooth Christianized Denmark (965) — Bluetooth technology named after him.

Medieval Kingdom (1050–1500)

Margrethe I — Kalmar Union 1397 united Denmark, Norway, Sweden. Royal castle Kronborg (Elsinore) — Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Reformation and Wars (1500–1700)

Reformation 1536 — Lutheran state church. Christian IV (1588–1648) — longest-reigning Danish king, built Copenhagen, lost to Sweden. Thirty Years' War.

Absolutism and Enlightenment (1660–1849)

Absolute monarchy 1660–1849. Christian VII, but really ruled Struensee (German doctor) — abolished slavery 1792 (first in Europe), freed serfs 1788. Battle of Copenhagen 1801, Copenhagen bombarded by British 1807.

Constitution and National Awakening (1849)

June 5, 1849 — Constitution, end of absolutism, democracy. War with Germany 1864 — lost Schleswig-Holstein, Denmark became smallest. H. C. Andersen, Søren Kierkegaard, N. F. S. Grundtvig — cultural golden age.

World Wars

WWI — neutral. WWII — Germany occupied 1940. White Buses rescue of Danish Jews 1943 — 95% of Jews saved to Sweden. Liberation 1945.

Modern Denmark

EU member 1973. 5.9 million inhabitants. Constitutional monarchy (Queen Margrethe II abdicated 2024, King Frederik X). LEGO, Maersk, Carlsberg — global brands. World's happiest country many years (UN Happiness Report).
